Position Overview & Specifications

Design Intern (9 months) - ustwo games - London

London, United Kingdom · Games

ustwo Games is a 40-person studio in London, best known as the creators of Monument Valley and more recently Alba: A Wildlife Adventure and Desta: The Memories Between. We are a multi-discipline group drawing from a diverse range of backgrounds and creative influences; our aim is to craft emotional, surprising experiences, for a broad audience, that change the world's perception of what interactive entertainment can be.

We are well known for making beautiful games, but their apparent simplicity belies the complex systems underlying the magic, whether it's the impossible illusions of Monument Valley or getting the animal-filled open world of Alba to run well on everything from iPhone 7 to PS5.

If you are excited about being a designer working in the games industry, but have no prior professional experience in this field, this role is for you. We are looking for a Design Intern who is passionate and creative, looking to gain professional experience in a supportive environment.

What you'll be doing

  • Working and learning with the guidance of the project lead and design team of 3-4 designers on Monument Valley 3.
  • Building experience in Unity and in-house tools to create and maintain levels
  • Designing levels and content on paper and in-engine with supervision
  • Observing and supporting user test sessions and recognising pain points in the game
  • Internalising the design philosophy of the game and studio
  • Collaborate with other departments to create creative solutions and novel player experiences
  • Other explorations depending on strengths, interests, and project needs, e.g. production, narrative, business, QA and marketing

Requirements

  • Strong at communication and design analysis skills
  • Drive to keep learning
  • Personal experience working in a game engine (Unity, Unreal, Gamemaker, Twine, or other) (professional experience not required)

Desirable

  • Collaborated on small projects like game jams

What we can offer you!

We are a friendly, passionate B corp studio, with a buzz of creativity. We offer a competitive package, including but not limited to private medical insurance, company pension, profit sharing scheme, individual training budget and amazing family friendly policies. We also offer 25 days holiday (inclusive of studio closure days over Christmas), and we promote flexible working patterns. You can find more information about our benefits on our website here.

This is a full time role with a hybrid working model. Our team is working in our Oval studio for a minimum of 2 days per week.

Application Question:

As this role does not require prior professional or university experience, we will primarily be assessing applications based on your answers to the Design Questions.

Please answer the design questions in relation to a single game, and deliver your answers in ONE of the following formats:

  • Answers in text format in the application, with a maximum of 2500 characters total
  • Answers in spoken word as an attachment, submitted either as video or audio, with a maximum of 3 minutes total
  • Answers in diagram and/or sketch as an attachment, submitted either as pdf or presentation format, with a maximum of 2 pages total, and maximum of 1000 characters.

Diversity Statement

Ustwo games is committed to making a measurable positive impact on people's everyday lives. We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity at our company. We believe diverse teams help us make better games and we actively hire for cultural growth. We welcome people of all ages, stories and backgrounds. We provide everyone with equal access to professional development.
