Position Overview & Specifications

Department

We are looking for a highly qualified full-time Postdoctoral Research Associate to join a new collaborative project between Professor Paul Genever’s laboratory, based in the Department of Biology within the York Biomedical Research Institute, and GSK. The Genever Lab and GSK have long-standing interests in skeletal biology and the development of new therapies for bone and cartilage disease such as osteoarthritis (OA). OA is a painful and disabling disease of articulating joints with substantial global healthcare and socioeconomic burden. Management of OA is primarily limited to pain relief and there are no approved disease-modifying OA drugs (DMOADs). We have engineered a suite of immortalised mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) lines for long-term analysis of phenotypic variation. Some of MSC these lines have been modified to act as reporters of differentiation status.

Role

In this project, you will determine the feasibility of developing a reporter system using immortalised MSC lines as a functional genomics screening platform to identify DMOADs. Based at the University of York, you will work closely with scientists at GSK in Stevenage. You will drive independent projects, but also work closely with other lab members and assist in the identification and development of potential areas of research and the development of proposals. You will be expected to write up research results for dissemination through publications, seminar and conference presentations and will be encouraged to participate in public engagement and science outreach activities. Opportunities for mentorship and additional collaborations will be available and encouraged. The post is full-time, fixed term for up to 3 years, and salary will be in the range £34,308 - £42,155 per annum.

Skills, Experience & Qualification needed

  • PhD or equivalent research experience in biomedical science, molecular biology or cell biology.
  • Demonstrable research experience, evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals, and having presented your work at national and/or international conferences.
  • Additional knowledge and experience of skeletal biology, gene editing techniques, reporter assays and data science would be advantageous.

Interview date: To be confirmed

For informal enquiries: please contact Prof Paul Genever via email paul.genever@york.ac.uk
