Position Overview & Specifications

Europe's top cancer charity, Cancer Research UK, has combined with the University of Cambridge to fund the world class Cancer Research UK Cambridge Institute, situated on the Addenbrooke's Biomedical Campus in Cambridge.

As part of the University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine, the Institute's research ranges from basic cancer biology through translational cancer research to clinical application. The Institute currently houses over 400 researchers and support staff with around 20 research groups and associated core facilities in a state-of-the-art research facility.

We are currently looking to recruit a Research Assistant to work in the Stem Cell Biology of the Intestine Laboratory run by Senior Group Leader, Professor Doug Winton. This post will be a 1-year fixed term contract in the first instance.

The Winton Lab explores the dynamics of stem and progenitor cells in normal and neoplastic settings with particular regard to to the intestine. Our approaches are integrative and functional: aiming to describe and understand the cellular biology of stem cells and to measure their clonal growth and the consequences of their somatic mutation in altering clonal advantage in defined transgenic models.

You will assist in diverse techniques including, cloning, genome editing, mammalian cell culture, FACS, confocal microscopy, murine tumour lineage tracing, xenotransplantation. In addition, you will assist as required in general laboratory administrative, housekeeping and maintenance duties.

Applicants should have a BSc degree level qualification (or equivalent) in relevant field with previous laboratory experience. Practical experience in any of the techniques listed above would be advantageous as would a good working knowledge of cell and molecular biology. This would suit a candidate looking for research insight before possibly embarking on a PhD programme. You will be conscientious, ambitious, with the ability to work well both independently and part of a team. You will also have the opportunity to work under your own initiative and apply your problem solving skills to troubleshoot challenging technical issues. Likewise, you will contribute towards running of various projects within the laboratory and you will present your work regularly at the lab meetings. Good IT and communication skills would also be useful.
