We are seeking to appoint a postdoctoral Research Fellow with a track record in Numerical Modelling of Biomedical Applications for a post funded by a prestigious Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) grant that focusses on the development of a new generation of wound dressings.
This £3.2M 6-year project aims to provide a technological platform based on biomimetic biomaterials to develop new wound dressings with tissue healing and diagnostic properties (i.e. theranostic wound dressings). In this role you will have the opportunity to undertake leading-edge numerical modelling research in bioengineering, develop your current skills and knowledge base, and collaborate with other world-leading researchers in the field.
You will be part of a dynamic multi-disciplinary team bringing together 13 researchers and 5 postdocs with expertise in chemistry, material science/engineering, computer modelling, applied molecular and cell biology, genomics and podiatry. Your role plays a central part in the project and will be responsible for developing and applying numerical and mathematical models for the simulation of complex phenomena in biomedical applications. You will mainly investigate numerically liquid droplet deposition and penetration characteristics into porous substrates and mathematically cell mobility characteristics across surfaces. You will be working in close collaborations with other post-doctoral researchers on this project, including one focused in optical diagnostics applied to laboratory experiments. In order to be successful in this role you should have:

  • A good (1 or 2:1) Mathematics and Applied Mathematics in Engineering, Physics, Biomedical Sciences/Engineering, Mathematics and Applied Mathematics or in any other relevant discipline.
  • Good written and oral communication skills and an attitude of open and active collaboration.
  • Competent in the use of simulation packages and or programming languages for the development of numerical and mathematical models.
  • Sufficient, up to date breadth or depth of specialist knowledge in the discipline and of research methods and techniques to work within established research programmes and evidence of commitment to engage in continuous professional development.

A PhD in either engineering, physics, bioengineering or mathematics and applied mathematics with a strong numerical and/or mathematical modelling background applied to biomedical flows and/or surfaces would be desirable.
For full details of this role and the criteria that you will need to meet, please see the attached job description and person specification.
Informal enquiries about this opportunity are encouraged and should be addressed to Dr. Anastasios Georgoulas (a.georgoulas@brighton.ac.uk).
This post is full-time, fixed term for 30 months, and we welcome applications from candidates seeking to job share.
