About us

UCL Department of Chemical Engineering is one of the top research and teaching departments in the UK and has world-class standing. The department offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, and has an extensive research portfolio across a wealth of areas from molecular scale to complex systems.

The Research Instrument Technician will provide general support for research instruments (20%) in the department and more focused support of a small group of shared instruments (80%). The support includes training new users, managing bookings and booking records, maintaining equipment and assisting users to obtain the best analysis of their samples.

About the role

The duties and responsibilities of the role include:
  • To advise researchers and academic staff on specification of equipment to meet their needs.
  • To provide support for, and manage a number of departmental instruments such as bench-top TEM (transmission electron microscope), FTIR (Fourier transform infrared), Gas Chromatography (GC), high speed camera, and DSC (differential scanning calorimetry), microscopes, etc.
  • To provide instrument user training, training record and maintain the instrument.

About you

Key requirements:

  • BSc or equivalent degree in physical science (e.g. Engineering, Chemistry, Physics)
  • Experience of working in research lab environment
  • Hands on experience with laboratory instrumentation (e.g. particle sizing, X-ray, thermal analysis, materials characterisation) or willingness to learn
