Position Overview & Specifications

The Royal Marsden Hospital is one of Europe’s largest Oncology centres and was the world’s first hospital dedicated to cancer research, diagnosis, treatment and education, with sites in Chelsea and Sutton our new Cavendish Square site

We are currently inviting applications from enthusiastic individuals to join the Diagnostic Radiology team at the Sutton site.

Key skills required:
  • Evidence of effective interpersonal skills with particular ability to liaise with multidisciplinary team members.
  • Experience of working in a pressurised environment.
  • Experience of using hospital IT and booking systems.
The successful candidate should be a highly motivated individual with good communication skills Punctual, presentable and courteous at all times and be able to remain calm under pressure.

They should be flexible to work to between the hours of 8am and 8pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 6pm weekends as shifts demand .

We have been awarded QSI accreditation in March 2018.

Our partnership with The Institute of Cancer Research and other key organisations means we offer access to the newest clinical trials and clinical trials of novel anti-cancer agents, all imaging modalities are fundamental to this process and forefront techniques and protocols are constantly being evolved within Radiology across all our sites.

The administration assistant/receptionist is an integral member of the Diagnostic radiology team, under the supervision of the Imaging Support Manager. The post holder will coordinate all administrative aspects of Diagnostic radiology including front line reception, scheduling of all modality bookings on the Radiology Information System( RIS) and clerical duties. The Imaging department also works within a high quality management system and has been awarded QSI Accreditation by UKAS since February

You will be required to be flexible and work at our other locations as and when required; including but not limited to our Chelsea and Sutton sites and new Cavendish Square location in central London.

Key areas of responsibility

Appointments, scheduling and capacity management
  • To deal with all diagnostic radiology requests from clinical teams, ensuring that the imaging is booked and scheduled within Cancer Waiting Times targets, research pathway targets and follow up targets
  • To liaise directly with the patient regarding their scheduled appointment, providing patient information, reassurance and managing patient expectations around the diagnostic radiology experience
  • To liaise with the clinical referring teams and nurse referrers to prioritise the scheduling of new diagnostic requests, research and follow up patient requests.
  • To schedule all diagnostic imaging in line with local Radiology guidelines and protocols.
  • To schedule patient imaging and modality capacity efficiently, having consideration for a range of influencing factors such as the radiologist and radiographer staff rota, equipment maintenance service dates , availability of outside imaging
  • To plan ahead and to reschedule workload when necessary, to ensure that the modality capacity is optimally utilised.
Modality management
  • To pre-prepare all radiology modality lists for the radiographers/nurses
  • To manage overbooking of radiology lists and emergency bookings in conjunction with the relevant superintendent
  • To arrange and schedule extra late or Saturday modality lists in conjunction with the relevant superintendents to meet unusual levels of patient demand, for example after bank holidays or in times of increased service demand
  • To ensure the relevant X-ray /US / mammography/ CT or MRI/interventional pre procedure prep list is given out to the referrers and checked the day before procedure
Service delivery
  • To work closely with the Imaging Support Manager and relevant modality leads and to take proactive measures to ensure that patients’ imaging is always in time for their scheduled clinic appointment
  • To ensure that the radiographers /nurses have access to the required patient information, requests and reports
  • To be responsible for regular collection of data and information as requested by the modality leads, Imaging support manager
  • To support service improvement initiatives implemented by the Imaging Support Manager and the Radiology service manager and to make suggestions for improvements to the service.
