Associate Lecturer in Twentieth-Century Art and Architecture

The Courtauld works to advance how we see and understand the visual arts, as an internationally-renowned centre for the teaching, research of art history and a major public gallery. Founded in 1932, the organisation has been at the forefront of the study of art ever since.

The Courtauld cares for one of the greatest art collections in the UK, displayed at The Courtauld Gallery in Somerset House, central London. Academically, The Courtauld is a specialist university and home to the largest community of art historians and conservators in the UK. It offers a range of degree programmes in the History of Art, curating and the conservation of easel and wall paintings.

The Courtauld wishes to appoint an Associate Lecturer with a specialism in twentieth-century art and architecture for a fixed-term period of 12 months from 1 September 2023. The successful candidate will provide sabbatical cover for Dr Robin Schuldenfrei, delivering the MA special option Experiencing Modernism: Utopia, Politics and Times of Turmoil, teaching a range of undergraduate modules and taking on some administrative responsibility to a total equivalent of a full-time faculty teaching and administration load. As a guide, this is usually up to 6-8 hours of seminar teaching or lecturing per week during each semester, the bulk of teaching usually finishes by the end of March, and most marking is complete by the end of June. The exact BA modules to be taught will be selected in discussion with the Head of Art History, from an existing list of approved options, with some scope for adapting to the applicant’s own specialism.

The applicant will also act as a personal tutor to a group of 12-15 BA students, and will be responsible, along with permanent faculty, for supervising up to 8 BA/Graduate Diploma Assessed Essays from the end of the Spring Semester (these are submitted in May). They will be responsible for the administration and assessment of their taught modules and will assist in the reciprocal moderation of marks for modules by other colleagues as appropriate. Training is provided for all Associate Lecturers in the summer preceding the academic year in which they will be teaching.

Associate Lecturers are appointed to fixed-term contracts, as specified in the job description. As a guiding principle, it is anticipated that an Associate Lecturer would not be rehired for more than three consecutive years. The Head of Art History or Dean may derogate from these guidelines as demanded by the programme, for example for reasons of coverage. While each fixed-term post is appointed following a fresh round of recruiting each year, the salary spine point will increase for those Associate Lecturers who are reappointed for a second or third year.
