The role

This is an exciting role for an experienced editor to work in-house on a much-loved publication. Hello World is the official magazine of the Raspberry Pi Foundation and is written for computing and computer science teachers and educators around the world, as well as for other people interested in computing and digital making. Hello World supports computing education by providing a host of resources and ideas for teaching. It also plays a community-building role, serving as a forum where practitioners share good practice and ideas. The magazine has more than 35,000 subscribers, including 10,000 subscribers to the print edition.

We are looking for an exceptional editor and writer with a passion for our mission and growing the community. You will be responsible for producing high-quality publications that support and represent the global community of computing educators and are a key pillar of our comms strategy. The ideal candidate will have a track record of building and managing author relationships, experience of copywriting, and awareness of design. You'll need to have excellent project management skills and the ability to identify and solve problems proactively and to meet deadlines.

The Editor reports to our Senior Communications Manager and sits within the Foundation’s Communications and Marketing team. The person in this role will also work closely with the Foundation’s team of educators, researchers, and computing education specialists, who are able to support them with respect to content selection and quality assurance. The Editor will work with an editorial board to stay abreast of trends in computing education and relevant content, and to reflect those in a timely manner.

In addition to the publication, there is also the Hello World podcast, newsletter, blog, social channels, and website that the Editor will contribute to. The podcast, for example, is produced by our education team in collaboration with the Editor, to align content ideas. In this role you will also sometimes represent the Foundation at community events.

We strive to make the Foundation a place where talented people who care about our mission can do the best work of their careers. We have a flexible and collaborative approach to all aspects of our work. If you’re the right person for the job, we’ll make it work for you, and you can be confident that you’ll be working with an exceptional team.

Responsibilities

  • Develop the medium- and long-term Hello World publication strategy in addition to its annual plan, in line with the Foundation's strategy and business plan
  • Manage the successful publication of the magazine and special editions as a whole, with responsibility for planning, commissioning, producing, and evaluating content
  • Ensure all Hello World content is high-quality and robust, and serves our global audience of educators
  • Keep up to date with emerging content themes internally and externally and make sure these are reflected in the magazine
  • Research, identify, and commission new authors for Hello World, with a particular focus on classroom teachers and people who can share research findings in an accessible way
  • Ensure the highest standards of editorial and design work are achieved, and troubleshoot problems (e.g. substandard work and missed deadlines)
  • Source and commission appropriate artwork, ensuring images reflect the content and fit with the look of the magazine
  • Oversee the layout, appearance, and content of articles, working closely with the design team
  • Lead editorial processes, including managing a small team of freelance copy editors, and work with printers to ensure timely, cost-effective publication
  • Liaise with authors and other key stakeholders in the publishing process to keep them informed about progress
  • Take charge of engagement and delivery KPIs, and report these effectively to internal and external stakeholders
  • Manage a project budget, ensuring services are delivered when invoiced
  • Support the marketing team with preparation of marketing materials as required, and with generating social media materials and marketing campaigns, including preparing additional content for the Raspberry Pi Foundation blog
  • Work with the digital products team to improve users' experience of Hello World online and integrate IT systems to support subscriptions

Experience and personal attributes

We recognise that everyone has the potential for growth, and we welcome applications from candidates who can demonstrate that they have some, but not all, of the experience and personal attributes listed here.

  • Commissioning and editing experience, with evidence of hands-on involvement in editorial work (copy editing, proofreading) on high-quality publications
  • A demonstrable track record of delivering published content that meets the desired objectives
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a detailed grasp of English style, spelling, grammar, and punctuation
  • Copywriting skills and design awareness
  • Familiarity with Google apps and Adobe InDesign
  • Experience of managing author relationships
  • Experience of project management
  • The ability to work under your own initiative and take responsibility for the delivery of complex publishing projects, as well as the ability to work as part of team
  • Experience of collecting, managing, and analysing data to support deliverables
  • The ability to balance multiple priorities and deal with ambiguity
  • An understanding of and interest in computing education

About us

The Raspberry Pi Foundation is a UK-based educational charity with the mission to enable young people to realise their full potential through the power of computing and digital technologies.

Established in 2008 and first known for our product — the wildly successful Raspberry Pi computer — the Foundation has developed education programmes, learning experiences, and products that are helping millions of young people learn vital new knowledge and skills

Through Code Club and CoderDojo, we support the world’s largest network of free informal computing clubs for young people. Tens of thousands of educators have taken our online courses, and millions of people use our free online learning resources. To deepen our understanding of how young people learn about computing and how to create with digital technologies, we conduct academic research, and we use that knowledge to increase the impact of our work and advance the field of computing education.

Across all of our work, we work hard to engage young people who come from backgrounds that are traditionally underrepresented in the field of computing or who experience educational disadvantage. We work all over the world, with teams based in the UK, Ireland, North America, and India, and partnerships with mission-aligned organisations in over 40 countries.

We are at the forefront of the global movement to help young people learn about computing and digital making. You can read more about our mission, values, and goals in our Annual Review 2021 and our Strategy 2022–2025.

Benefits

In addition to competitive salaries, we offer a range of benefits for all of our colleagues, including:

  • 25 days’ annual leave
  • Generous company pension scheme with 8% employer and 4% employee contributions
  • Private healthcare
  • Life assurance and long-term illness insurance policy
  • Investment in professional development and learning
  • Flexible work hours as needed, to fit around childcare or other commitments
  • Generous family leave policy
  • Cycle-to-work scheme and season ticket loan

Timetable for applications
Closing date: Monday 3 July, 9am BST
Phone screen: As soon as possible after your application
First-round interview: Week commencing 3 July
Second-round interview: Week commencing 10 July

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people, and we expect all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. If successful in the selection process, you will be required to undergo a background check to confirm that you are a suitable person to work with children. Further background checks will be made at regular intervals thereafter.
