Position Overview & Specifications

We welcome applicants for the following post based across the hospitals of Oxford University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. This year long post will allow the trainee exposure to various sub-specialties in Anaesthesia including but not limited to Vascular, Regional, Transplant, Major Cancer, Emergency, Trauma Anaesthesia, and Intensive Care Medicine.

The start date for this post is flexible, although February or August starts are preferable to link with Trust induction and trainee doctors’ changeover periods. This post is only suitable for candidates who are eligible for registration with the GMC.

Fellows are expected to keep accurate contemporaneous records of clinical activities or events, including pre-operative assessment, pre- and postoperative care, pain relief, critical incidents, etc., using the Trust approved documentation.

The work schedule is resident, full shift 1:8 on call rota, mainly covering theatres but this may occasionally change to involve cover in Obstetrics and all Critical Care, especially in period so f high need, e.g. pandemic. Daytime work will typically include 3-monthly modules in specialties discussed between the Fellow, the programme director, and the College Tutors to ensure training of current trainees is not compromised.

The post holder will work within the Oxford Radcliffe NHS Trust group of hospitals:
  • The John Radcliffe Hospital – Trauma, Neuro, Obstetrics, Vascular, Airway, Plastics, Paediatrics, Gynaecology, Obstetrics and Intensive Care
  • The Churchill Hospital – Transplant, Oncology, Airway, and Intensive Care
  • The Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre

Fellows are expected to keep a record of their training including a log book of cases and a record of other activity

Fellows will be allocated time for completion of projects supporting their goals. There are numerous opportunities within the department for completion of projects including national audits, teaching medical students, and working in OxSTaR, the locally run simulation centre.
