Position Overview & Specifications

This exciting and newly created role sits within the growing Sustainability Team at Northumbria Healthcare Facilities Management.

The post will play a pivotal role in supporting the journey towards net zero within a very ambitious NHS trust.

The role is to support trust wide environmental & sustainability initiatives. The successful post holder will work under the strategic direction of the Head of Sustainability and the wider team carrying out a diverse range of individual and support projects within the sustainability portfolio of work including but not limited to; active travel, energy and carbon, and reuse .

This is a post suitable for an individual who wishes to develop and extend specialised skills and knowledge in the field of environmental management / sustainability within a large NHS provider trust.

Based within the multi-disciplinary Sustainability Team, you will be a key contributor to the Trusts Green Plan and Net Zero agenda.

The post holder will: -

To assist the Sustainability team with the implementation of the trust wide approach to achieving net zero.

Provide support and assistance to the Head of Sustainability and the wider team, to achieve the aims set out in the ‘Delivering a Net Zero NHS’ statutory guidance.

Assist in the implementation of policies, strategies & projects that will contribute to achieving national, regional and trust wide Green Plan targets these include but are not limited to carbon footprinting, energy, utilities, travel and transport, clean air, biodiversity and sustainability communications.

Provide on-going support to the wider team to ensure compliance with legislation, codes of practice and sector guidance.

To benchmark consumption data and contribute to managing the Trust’s carbon footprint.

Liaising with clinical and non-clinical teams and directorates to collate, interpret and analyse travel and transport data as well as leading the implementation of modal shift projects.

To organise & coordinate events to encourage sustainable and active travel across the Trust.

Champion the environmental agenda internally and externally to drive forward the Trust’s green credentials.

Contribution to the production, implementation and monitoring of Environmental / Sustainability / Net Zero related strategy documents and action plans.

Northumbria Healthcare Facilities Management Limited (NHFM) are a wholly-owned subsidiary business of Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust. NHFML manages the entire property estate for the Trust and supports other clients across a range of capital projects and facilities services. NHFML employs over 1,000 staff working across all disciplines of estates and facilities management.

The Sustainability Officer is a key member of the Sustainability Team and will work closely with the Head of Sustainability to support the delivery ambitions of the Trust Green Plan and the wider Net Zero NHS targets.

The role provides the opportunity to gain experience in a number of thematic areas outlined in the Trust Green Plan. You will lead on active travel and green spaces projects and support projects within waste & reuse, energy and carbon and clinical sustainability.

The post holder will have high levels of autonomy and the ability to act independently on areas within their field of expertise.
