Position Overview & Specifications

We are seeking to appoint a singing teacher to join our team of part-time instrumental and vocal teachers.

The Post and the Department

The Music department consists of four teachers. Richard Poyser is the Director of Music and he is assisted by three colleagues, one of whom specialises in Music Technology. All pupils study Music in Years 7-9; the curriculum is broad and varied with an emphasis on practical music-making, and seeks to lay the foundations for further enjoyment and study of the subject.

The Department offers a rich extracurricular programme which comprises a range of auditioned and non-auditioned ensembles including: an orchestra; choir; the auditioned chamber choir Gaudeamus; bands; jazz groups; and smaller string, wind and chamber ensembles. There are termly concerts and regular musical productions, including: Be More Chill (2022); The Marriage of Figaro (2020); Legally Blonde (2019); Sweeney Todd (2017. The Department also has close links with professional musicians and festivals (such as Oxford Chamber Music Festival) to enhance, further, the musical life of the school.

Role overview

Our peripatetic instrumental and singing teachers are experts in their field who have developed a teaching practice which nurtures technical ability, musicality and a life-long appreciation of music in a warm and encouraging manner. We place a high degree of importance on technical competency and musicality as well as the ability to convey enthusiasm and enjoyment of playing and performing. To that end we are committed to enabling our students to enjoy Music at the same time as supporting them to achieve their potential.

Flexibility of approach, a sense of fun, a readiness to respond to pupils’ individual needs and an enthusiastic, open approach to teaching are among the qualities we look for in our teachers. Music exams may be used to encourage progress but there is no onus to push students through exams if they would prefer not to take them.

Pay

Peripatetic instrumental teachers are paid at a competitive hourly rate, plus holiday pay.
