Trainee Clinical Scientist in Pharmaceutical Science

The Pharmacy Service in NHS Lothian is looking to expand the number of roles open to science graduates working in healthcare. If you have a First or Second Class Honours Degree in physics, chemistry, pharmacy or an allied scientific subject and are looking to undertake further post-graduate study while working within a structured training programme in the healthcare science setting, then NHS Lothian would like to invite you to apply for the post of Trainee Clinical Scientist in our Pharmacy & Medicines Service.


This supernumerary post, in partnership with NHS Education for Scotland, offers training opportunities to high quality science graduates who are passionate about science and its role in modern healthcare. You will follow a formal Scientist Training Programme (STP) in Clinical Pharmaceutical Sciences, which will involve completion of an MSc degree via block-release and distance-learning through the University of Manchester (find out more at manchester.ac.uk). The training in NHS Lothian includes rotations and acquaintanceships across a range of pharmaceutical science specialities, such as Clinical Trials, Quality Assurance, Radiopharmacy and Aseptic across our acute hospital sites.

Your training within the NHS Lothian Pharmacy & Medicines Service will lead towards Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registration as a Clinical Scientist (link to HCPC website), aligned with the framework for UK-wide Modernising Scientific Careers, where further roles within NHS Lothian are being developed for career progression.


About the NHS Lothian Pharmacy & Medicines Service

NHS Lothian covers Edinburgh city, East Lothian, Midlothian and West Lothian. We are the second largest health system in NHS Scotland and one of only four teaching Boards. We have strategic partnerships with local Universities, Local Authorities and our four Integration Joint Boards. We serve a population of 900,000, providing a range of primary, community based and acute hospital services. We also provide regional and national services across a range of clinical specialties.


The vision for the Pharmacy & Medicines service is to deliver clinically led, person-centred services to ensure patients across Lothian get the best from their medicines and pharmacy services. Appointment is for three years, subject to satisfactory performance, starting from September 2023. The appointment will be as a Trainee Clinical Scientist, with the salary scale 'Agenda for Change' Band 6 £37,831- £46,100, with funding for the postgraduate training and degree course also being provided.
