Position Overview & Specifications

Job Title Collections Officer

Hours per week 22.5 (flexible working can be offered)

Responsible for Volunteer team Supervision

Contract This is a project-funded role, funded by the Foyle Foundation. It is a fixed-term contract for one year.

Salary £25,750 per annum, pro-rata to £15,450

Purpose of job

This role will develop and support the collections care work at the Museum of Cambridge, enabling greater access to our collection of 40,000 social history objects while meeting Accreditation standards of best practice.

As a member of the Engagement Team, the Collections Officer will help make the Muse- ums’ collections and stories more accessible to the people of Cambridge and the county through in person and online engagement.

The role, working alongside the Engagement Manager will support in developing exhibi- tions involving research, planning and display as well as recruiting a team of volunteers to carry out inventory and collections care projects.

A crucial part of this role is to support collections engagement and events to bring the objects of the Museum’s collection to life. Engagement with collections through workshops, talks, social media, blogs and conservation in action will highlight the unique social his- tory of Cambridge and the surrounding villages.

Principal Tasks and Responsibilities

1. Support the Engagement Manager with an exciting schedule of partner exhibitions, supporting with research, coordination and display of objects.

2. Develop and implement a plan for preventative collections care in the Museum and storage spaces; including cleaning, pest management and humidity control and condition reporting.

3. Bring collections care to life through social media posts, and blogs as well as en- gagement through trails, exhibitions, and open days.

4. Recruit and supervise a collections volunteer team to embed high standards of col- lection management in the Museum and continue ongoing collections projects in- ventorying, numbering and auditing objects.

5. Ensure all supervised volunteers and members of the public are aware of relevant

Health and Safety and Safeguarding considerations, and ensure the implementation of appropriate risk-reduction measures.

6. To be a key holder of the Museum and act as duty manager to the Museum.

7. Any other duties that can be reasonably required and are compatible with the nature of this job description.
