Position Overview & Specifications

Position: Research and Development Microbiologist (KTP Associate)

Based at: National Bed Federation, Skipton

Salary: £33,000


The role:

An exciting opportunity has become available to work full time on a 34-month Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) to develop and launch a cleanliness standard and point-of-production test methodology that can be adopted as an industry standard, by member and non-member organisations, to significantly enhance recycling rates across the sector and income growth for the National Bed Federation.

Employed and supported by an academic team from the University, your time will be split between Manchester and North/West Yorkshire.

Qualifications we require:

BSc in Microbiology or a related biological discipline (minimum 2:1).

Applicants who hold a 2:2 Honours Degree in addition to either 1 years' relevant experience or a related higher degree will be considered.

Application requirements:

Essential skills we require as a minimum:

  • Experience with classic microbiology techniques such as aseptic technique, autoclave, serial dilutions, use of agar.
  • Experience with data handling relating to microbiology, e.g., calculating colony forming units, assessing statistical significance.
  • Understanding and/or experience of PCR and DNA sequencing.
  • Knowledge of, or experience in, developing methods relating to microbiology, particularly those that relate to assessing presence of microorganisms in or on a material.

The successful candidate will:

  • Understand good scientific practice and health and safety requirements at Biological Safety Level 2.
  • Be aware of how best to meticulously approach sample custody, extraction and data gathering.
  • Be able to coherently analyse data with appropriate methods of statistical analysis.
  • Be capable of conducting high quality research resulting in production of scientific manuscripts and technical reports.
  • Be able to synthesize data into suitable narrative for presentation to a range of stakeholders.
  • Be capable of preparing essential communication and discussions of the proposed work for adaptions with regulatory bodies.
  • Be willing to work and travel across multiple UK sites and be able to travel internationally, as required.
