Position Overview & Specifications

Your role and responsibilities

  • Deliver an effective, efficient and coordinated clinical service, supported by the nursing and functional support teams within the practice;
  • See referred clients and emergency cases, caring for in-patients, investigating clinical cases and providing the appropriate diagnostic medical and surgical services for patients;
  • Perform patient examinations, diagnostic, medical and surgical procedures in a way that will deliver the highest quality care whilst minimising patient stress and discomfort, recommending referral to other specialists if appropriate;
  • Participate in morning and evening ward rounds;
  • Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and deliver exceptional client care, developing a rapport with clients to determine their needs and wishes;
  • Explain physical examination findings and the diagnosis to the client, generating and presenting a treatment plan and advising on the best course of action for the patient;
  • Work in accordance with the Veterinary Rota, covering for sickness and holiday as necessary for the business, actively participating in weekend, bank holiday and on call services as required;
  • Produce and maintain excellent client, patient, surgical and medical records to ensure all necessary information is kept up to date through established protocols;
  • Assist colleagues in follow up and future management of the patient;
  • Work with colleagues in rehabilitation services to ensure patients receive the best post-operative care possible;
  • Provide excellent customer service to all referring surgeons and practices, including timely professional and respectful communication with an emphasis on reporting communications with the client;
  • Embrace and support the training ethos of the practice, making time to support and develop its Residents, Interns, RVNs and Student Nurses to allow them to excel and advance in their chosen fields;
  • Assist in the professional growth and education of referring and primary care veterinary surgeons through recommendations and interaction on referred and shared cases;
  • Publish prospective and retrospective studies and review papers;
  • Undertake CPD to meet the requirements for continued professional registration, demonstrating a proven interest in the specialist field and related innovation and research;
  • Deliver at least two CPD events per year (e.g. BSAVA, VSS CPDs, Clinical Clubs and regional groups etc.), and support and attend Journal Club and M&M meetings
  • Assist with marketing the services of the practice through a variety of external activities to include supporting ‘open days’ and events both on site and away from the practice;
  • Adhere to and maintain the highest standards of professional behaviour in accordance with the RCVS Professional Code of Conduct, leading by example within the practice as a senior member of staff;
  • Follow clinical protocols and adhere to all practice policies and procedures;
  • Participate in performance management procedures, including appraisals and Vet Meetings;
  • Assist with quality assurance procedures and checks;
  • Ensure that safe working practices are adopted in compliance with health and safety regulations;
  • Respect the unique contribution of every individual and positively embrace equality and diversity;
  • Use all systems and processes available for the rapid and efficient completion of job tasks;
  • Undertake such other duties commensurate with the position as may reasonably be required;
  • Do nothing which could prejudice the reputation of the veterinary profession or the business.

Veterinary Specialists, Scotland is a newly established and rapidly expanding, purpose-built, multi-disciplinary referral centre in the heart of Scotland. Based in Livingston, just 20 minutes away from Edinburgh, 40 minutes from Glasgow and 15 minutes from the Edinburgh International Airport, it allows for easy access to cities, or for an escape to the hills and sea. Since opening in October 2020, we have expanded from 8 to 17 specialists and residency-trained clinicians across seven clinical disciplines. Our building has huge potential for expansion and the clinic is still an exciting work in progress. This is an exciting opportunity to help to establish a new service and to drive its development.
