Position Overview & Specifications

The NHS Northern Gambling Clinic is a regional service, with clinics in Leeds, Manchester and Newcastle. The plan is for it to form part of a network of NHS clinics nationally, and the post holder will be involved in the national gambling clinician’s network. The service is led by a Psychologist and the core programme for service users and carers is psychological therapy in a group and/or individual format. The multi-disciplinary team is made up of psychology, psychiatry, & mental health nurses.

The post holder will be based in our Leeds and/or Manchester clinic and there is the expectation of some travel.

The post holder will work closely with the Operational Manager in overseeing efficiency and effectiveness of treatment/service provided.

The post holder will have management and clinical responsibilities which will be split to ensure the smooth and affective running of the Northern Gambling Service across the Northwest and Northeast of England.

The aim of the service is to provide a therapeutically safe environment within which a person can work with the specialist multi-disciplinary team, to understand the nature of their gambling disorder and associated mental health co-morbidities and to develop a personalised care pathway to enable them to address their gambling behaviour.

The post holder will be expected to provide leadership, management and supervision / appraisal for staff (and other members of a multi-disciplinary team) and often lead / coordinate / supervise teams of staff in the delivery and evaluation of care.

The post holder will also provide initial assessments, risk management, and manualised psychosocial intervention for those with the disorder. This will be a mix of group and one to one intervention, based on motivational interviewing and cognitive behavioural therapy. Training and supervision will be provided, but experience of working with people with addiction problems and using a psychosocial approach is an advantage. The postholder benefits from the support of the MDT, which includes a Consultant Psychologist, a Consultant Psychiatrist, a Psychologist, specialist addiction nurses, and an assistant psychologist.
