Are you enthusiastic, motivated and have leadership skills? It YESThis job could be for you! An exciting opportunity has arisen for the post of Advanced Clinical Practitioner in the Paediatric Unit.

The Advanced Clinical Practitioner role is central to the delivery of care within the Paediatric Unit at Royal Preston Hospital. You will be required to deliver an advanced level of clinical practice in the field of paediatric care working within local and nationally agreed protocols and guidelines.

The ACP exercises independent judgement to assess, investigate, diagnose, plan, implement and evaluate the clinical care and management of paediatric patients. They will work alongside Consultants and support the clinical decision making in the care of children admitted to the Paediatric Unit.

The Advanced Clinical Practitioner is an experienced children’s nurse who has successfully completed formal education at Master’s level on a recognised ACP programme. You will have a key working relationship with all members of the nursing and medical staff and members of the multidisciplinary team involved in the care of paediatric patients.

The Advanced Clinical Practitioner bridges the professional and clinical boundaries between nursing and medical care, enabling them to take on the role and responsibilities formerly undertaken by medical staff. The APNP practises both autonomously and in partnership with the multidisciplinary team under the clinical supervision provided by a Paediatric Consultant and/or Middle Grades, whilst emulating the four pillars of advanced practice.

  • You will use clinical experience to make independent judgement’s to assess, investigate, diagnose, plan, implement, manage and evaluate clinical nursing and medical care and management of paediatric patients. The ACP will take a lead in the Paediatric Assessment Unit (PAU), which includes the identification, on-going assessment, treatment and discharge of PAU patients.
  • Work within the multidisciplinary team to deliver advanced clinical nursing and medical practice, clinical leadership and provides clinical supervision/support and structured teaching and mentorship for multidisciplinary professionals (including medical staff) to facilitate ongoing education, training and development.
  • Participation in audit, research and development initiating the implementation, evaluation and development of multidisciplinary guidelines and protocols, incorporating current best evidence in consultation with medical and nursing staff for the care of paediatric patients.
  • You will promote the concept of clinical governance and work within agreed Trust/Unit protocols and guidelines.
  • To practice autonomously with a high level of accountability at an advanced clinical level in the direct delivery of high quality care, making critical clinical decisions based on advanced clinical skills assessment.
  • Plan and manage complete episodes of care, working in partnership with others and delegating and referring as appropriate to optimise health outcomes and resource use, as well as providing direct support to patients and clients
  • To provide clear leadership and direction to support both the medical and nursing teams acting as a role model for the Trust, presenting a positive image to patients and staff.
  • Advocate and contribute to the development of an organisational culture that supports continuous learning and development, evidence-based practice and succession planning.
  • Critically engage in research activity, adhering to good research practice guidance, so that evidence based strategies are developed and applied to enhance quality, safety, productivity and value for money.
