Position Overview & Specifications

Sevenoaks | On premise | Voluntary
Permanent | Part-time / Volunteer | KWT76

We simply would not be able to achieve what we do without the help of volunteers. The work is extensive both in area and content, and it requires the hard work and enthusiasm of volunteers.

The Greensand Commons of Sevenoaks and Westerham share a rich history and have been a vital resource for local communities for generations. As well as being in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), the Commons are Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and/or Local Nature Reserves (LNR) for their areas of ancient woodland and open heathland. In addition, Hosey Common’s tunnelled quarry workings are important for bat species such as Daubenton’s, Natterer’s, whiskered/Brandt’s and brown long-eared bats.

The project is based across 8 different commons and aims to enhance and protect the lowland heath found on these sites – a habitat which is rarer than rainforest. Improving lowland heath for the specialised flora and fauna that relies upon it for their survival not only increases biodiversity through a mosaic of different habitats but also engages the local community in its significance and beauty. Working with local partners, volunteers, community groups, and schools is at the heart of the project and key to promoting and protecting both its historical and environmental importance.

The role is based over 8 sites;

Bitchet Common, Fawke Common, Seal Chart, Sevenoaks Common, Crockhamhill Common, Hosey Common, Farley Common, Sevenoaks Weald

A day in your life might include

  • Scrub removal
  • Felling small trees (season dependent)
  • Bracken control
  • Footpath improvement
  • Installing way markers
  • Wildlife surveys

Experience and Skills needed for this role

  • You should be flexible and enthusiastic with a passion for nature and wildlife.
  • You should be willing to work as part of a team and enjoy meeting new people.
  • Happy to work outdoors in all weathers.

Benefits and Training Opportunities

It’s a great way to learn something new, meet new people, get some fresh air and be part of something positive for the environment in your local area. Plus, we serve excellent tea, coffee and biscuits at every task day! Learning opportunities are built into the monthly program for volunteers to attend e.g. guided ID walks with local experts. There are also training opportunities available for volunteers who demonstrate significant commitment to the project e.g. brush cutter and chainsaw tickets.

Considerations

Reasonable expenses can be paid. This role is open to applicants over the age of 16.

Volunteers are welcome to do as little or as much as they feel capable of doing. All tools, equipment and relevant training are provided. We just ask that volunteers dress for the weather (long sleeves and trousers advised) and wear sturdy footwear, like walking boots.
