Jacobs are looking for Engineering Design Degree Apprentices to join our vibrant Decommissioning Projects team based in Birchwood Park, Warrington. As an Engineering Design Degree Apprentice at Jacobs, you will be enrolled onto a scheme that will develop you to attain the knowledge, skills & behaviours that are required of a professional engineer. You will learn to apply Maths and Science in relation to the fundamental principles of engineering as well as becoming a competent user in Computer Aided Design (CAD) to produce 3D models and 2D detailed design drawings for our clients.

An Engineering Design Degree apprentice will specialise in one of the following pathways:

  • Mechanical Engineering Design
  • Electrical, Control & Instrumentation (EC&I) Engineering Design

What are we looking for?

Throughout your apprenticeship, you will be working on a variety of interesting projects within a multi-disciplinary team solving technical problems. As a design engineer you should be interested in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects, have a passion for engineering and a real interest in how machines and systems are designed, constructed and operated. We are looking for bright individuals with an enquiring mindset who are self-motivated, communicate well with others and great all team players.
How will the apprenticeship be delivered?
Year 1 – Apprentices will begin their academic and engineering studies at our local training provider full time (5 days a week)
Years 2-5 Apprentices will attend the workplace 4 days a week and continue their academic studies 1 day a week at our local training provider.



What qualifications will you get out of this?

The apprenticeship programme consists of 2 phases:

  • Level 5 ST0380 Nuclear Technician Apprenticeship
  • Level 5 Higher National Diploma (HND) in Engineering aligned to your chosen pathway

For candidates with the potential to progress further:

  • Level 6 ST0289 Nuclear Scientist and Nuclear Engineer Apprenticeship
  • Level 6 Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (BEng) over a further 2-year period.
  • Specific qualifications are subject to change and replaced with an equivalent.

How will you be assessed?
Throughout your apprenticeship you must complete a portfolio of evidence that is assessed against your apprenticeship standard. At the end of your apprenticeship, you will complete an End Point Assessment (EPA) which involves an interview from a chartered engineer, reviewing your compiled portfolio of evidence. On completion you will have demonstrated that you are a fully qualified & experienced design engineer.

What are the entry requirements?

  • Minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grades 9 to 4 (Grades A* to C) including Mathematics, English Language and one Science or Engineering subject.
  • Minimum of 96 UCAS points at A-Level / T-Level, STEM subjects preferred (e.g. Mathematics, Chemistry, Biology, Physics or Science) but not mandatory.
  • Other Level 3 STEM qualifications may be considered.
  • Vocational equivalents at level 3 or higher will also be considered as equivalent to UCAS points.
  • If you do not have Mathematics at A Level then you must achieve a minimum of Grade 6 (Grade B) at GCSE.
