Position Overview & Specifications

The HSBC Global Legal function plays an important role in protecting the Group’s reputation by helping to future-proof the organisation through robust legal risk and issue advisory. The team offers a diverse range of legal skills, jurisdictional experience and practice specialisms across all countries and territories in which our businesses operate.

We are currently seeking an experienced individual to join this team in the role of Legal Counsel, Global Data Legal.

In this role, you will:

  • Provide advice and support on data privacy and other data-related legal issues to legal and business teams across the HSBC Group, focusing in particular on HSBC UK and Global Wealth & Personal Banking (WPB).
  • Provide high-quality, specialised legal support and advice within the assigned area of responsibility and on a variety of legal matters including matters that may be complex or have potential for significant impact.
  • Maintain and develop positive and professional working relationships with members of the HSBC UK and Global Wealth & Personal Banking (WPB) businesses.
  • Provide prompt, commercial, practical and high-quality legal advice and services in a cost-effective manner.
  • Have the opportunity to develop and progress.
Requirements

To be successful in this role you should meet the following requirements:

  • Qualified lawyer (including overseas qualified lawyers)
  • Expertise in providing legal advice on global data privacy and data issues. You will be knowledgeable and confident in advising on the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the UK GDPR and the UK Data Protection 2018, and preferably hold an additional recognised data privacy qualification such as IAPP CIPP/E certification or the BCS Certification in Data Protection
  • Experience of providing data privacy and data-related legal advice on major projects and change initiatives and delivering these effectively across a wider portfolio of requests
  • Ability and experience of working in an agile legal team with multi-disciplinary skill sets and multiple business stakeholders
  • Sound legal documentation drafting skills including experience of advising on data privacy aspects of financial services matters, including product and client facing documentation
  • Proven record of financial services product knowledge would also be beneficial.

The base location for this role is London with Hybrid working.
