Job description
We are seeking a Grade 4 Technical Officer to join the National Fisheries Laboratory in Brampton, Cambridgeshire on a 12-month assignment. The NFL are a high achieving national team that contributes to the protection and development of freshwater fisheries across England.
The role will primarily focus on support for our disease investigations, including advising fisheries officers in their response to incidents, team support and liaison, data management and reporting, and helping to improve and develop our service.
You will work closely with the operational lead for national fish disease surveillance and investigations and will provide support to our national incident response advisor and technical specialists. You will play a key role in shaping our service to best protect fish, fisheries, and the environment.
You will advise area-based fisheries officers in their response to fish disease investigations, championing best practice, providing tailored fisheries management advice and guidance, and strengthening outcomes to benefit fisheries.
You will have an active leadership role in the day-to-day co-ordination of fish disease incident response and investigations within the fish health team and be a point of contact for area-based fisheries teams. Delivering through others, you will manage, develop, and improve the service we provide.
You will communicate regulatory controls, improve technical resilience of colleagues, and integrate improved management practices to help fisheries recover.
The team
The National Fisheries Laboratory team act as a single point of expertise to identify, monitor and limit the impact of current and future threats to fisheries and the aquatic environment from fish disease, parasites, pathogens, non-native species, and ageing. Our work consists of the delivery of laboratory diagnostics, technical advice, and guidance to inform our regulation.

Experience/skills required
An interest in and knowledge or experience of fish health and disease, freshwater fisheries incident response and the aquatic environment.
Organisational awareness of fisheries remit and ability to work across a range of stakeholders.
Good analytical, data management, report writing, and IT skills (proficient in MS applications).
As a large part of this role will be customer focused, you will be an excellent communicator (oral and written) and should have strong influencing and inter-personal skills.
Self-motivated and organised with excellent attention to detail, problem solving and decision-making skills.
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Able to prioritise demanding seasonal workloads, be comfortable working to tight deadlines, and have a pragmatic approach to achieving objectives.
Capable of taking on feedback and striving for continuous improvement.

The National Fisheries Laboratory is based in Brampton, Cambridgeshire, however this is a national role with the flexibility to be home or office based. Occasional visits to the National Fisheries Laboratory will be required along with the possibility of site visits and travel to other locations. Incidents can often be at short notice and will involve flexibility in working patterns.
