Position Overview & Specifications

This permanent Specialist Biomedical Scientist post will cover across both Haematology and Blood Transfusion and offers an exciting opportunity for an experienced, motivated, focused and enthusiastic HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist to further develop their own specialist knowledge and skills and share this with trainees, HCA's, Clinical Scientists and Apprentices.

You will be part of dynamic, experienced, critical front-line blood science team who provide specialist services 24/7, 365 to the patients of East Kent & beyond. You will be a part of a hard-working team who strive to put the patient at the heart of our service. The role is based at William Harvey Hospital but there may be the opportunity and/or need to work across the other 2 main sites infrequently.

Our laboratories have recently been upgraded with state-of the-art automated systems to manage our ever increasing demand. We are also fully UKAS ISO 15189; 2012 accredited as are all Pathology disciplines within the organisation. Our 3 Transfusion laboratories are also fully MHRA compliant.

To undertake scientific tasks to a specialist level in haematology and blood transfusion laboratories within a section of the Departments as delegated by Senior staff including when appropriate, monitoring the performance and supervision of trainee Biomedical Scientists and Assistant Healthcare Scientists

The post holder will be required to undertake routine analytical work involving both automated and manual techniques, film/ morphology review, sign out results and contribute generally to the delivery of the service.

The post holder will be required to make timely and accurate decisions regarding the efficient and safe functioning of the Haematology and Blood Transfusion laboratories. However, they must be able to recognise when to seek advice from more senior staff.

A key part of the post holder’s role will be to develop and implement systems and procedures within the Department to enable the service to run effectively, and to ensure it complies with legal requirements.

To commence work on the “Out of Hours” CPP rota as soon as possible after appropriate training and competency assessment has been carried out.
