Java Backend Engineer - AWS

About us

Direct Line Group is one of the UK's largest insurance companies and home to some of the best-known brands including Direct Line, Churchill and Green Flag.

You will report in to the Chapter Lead / Engineering Manager.

What you'll do:

  • Produce and maintain clean Java code

  • Work with a diverse team of engineers

  • Contribute to application architecture - develop

  • Build & improving software and services through CI/CD pipelines

  • Work with DevOps engineer(s) to agree on and apply best practices

  • Stay on top of AWS offerings and taking advantage of new services if applicable

  • Maintain, upgrade, and improve services across the business

  • Conduct code reviews to ensure compliance with development best practices

  • Discuss and implement security protocols within software and services

  • Promote cloud usage for scalable solutions

  • Set and lead best ways of working to archive amazing engineering collaboration.

What you'll need:

  • Understand about developing low-latency/distributed enterprise applications in Java

  • Understanding of the Spring Framework / Spring Boot

  • Experience with functional programming

  • Understanding of agile processes and incremental delivery, translating high level ideas to stories (requirements gathering)

  • Passionate about Software Craftsmanship and Clean Code

  • Passionate about Test Driven Development

  • Understanding of CI/CD

  • Understanding of DevOps, Infrastructure as Code

  • Understanding of different database technologies, their use cases and trade-offs e.g. SQL, NoSQL, etc.

  • Understanding of messaging technologies, their use cases and trade-offs
