Summary

Ciena is seeking aspiring Software Engineers to intern with our engineering team and help drive the development of the Vyatta Network Orchestrator, in order to support our customers in developing and deploying their networks. Interns will participate in a subset of the following responsibilities, should exhibit some or all of the key competencies and should be working towards a relevant degree.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Develop container based microservices written in Python, delivered on Kubernetes
  • Participate in all stages of software development: requirements analysis, architecture and high-level design, implementation and testing
  • Troubleshoot software issues, provide customer and verification support
  • Design and develop unit tests and test-automation suites
  • Influence the software architecture, improve resiliency, debugability and maintainability
  • Find, evaluate and use available (open source) libraries, components and tooling as necessary
  • Deploy software to cloud environments and interact with cloud managed services

Dev Key Competencies & Skills

What technical experience and/or professional and personal skills are required for this role?

  • Excellent analytical, problem solving and Python programming skills
  • Excellent communication and technical documentation skills
  • Excellent organization skills to manage time, resources, and priorities
  • Familiarity with Linux development environment and container based development
  • Ideal candidate will have hands-on experience or be familiar with the following:
    • Knowledge of network routers/switches or routing protocols (OSPF, BGP, etc.)
    • Experience in open-source software development
    • Experience with automated test frameworks such as Jenkins
    • Experience with design and development tools such as Atlassian (Bitbucket, Confluence, Jira), VSCode, GDB, etc.
    • Experience with Linux based OS (ideally Debian)
    • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes and Cloud Platforms
  • Independent self-starter and capable of effectively managing priorities to achieve business objectives
  • Comfortable in a team environment while still taking accountability and working independently as needed

Education & Qualifications

  • Studying towards a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science / Engineering or equivalent degree
  • You must be currently based in the UK and hold a valid permanent work permit for the country
