Birmingham City University is the university for Birmingham - delivering transformational higher education to a large and diverse body of students from Birmingham, West Midlands, UK and overseas. The Planning and Performance Department is a small, friendly team where you will be supported with development and given the opportunity to learn new skills. The team delivers dynamic, contextualised business insights to support academic quality assurance and enhancement, institutional strategic decision-making, business planning and continuous improvement. We work with colleagues across the University to support senior leaders in making well-informed and evidence-led decisions. Our remit includes horizon scanning and providing interpretation of the implications of economic and policy changes on the University. We ensure that the University meets statutory and regulatory reporting requirements and provide guidance on compliance with conditions of registration with the Office for Students.

As Data Analyst (Student and Data Returns), you will provide management information and business insight in relation to student data, including scenario modelling to support student number planning and delivery of strategy. You will be responsible for supporting student data quality assurance to ensure that BCU student statutory returns are accurate, timely and comply with the latest requirements defined by the regulatory body.

You will also develop a comprehensive understanding of the portfolio of work undertaken by the Planning and Performance Department and will be given opportunities to work across a variety of tasks within the department in response to business need and prioritisation of work across the academic year.

Main Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide business intelligence and management reporting on student populations to support high level reporting to boards and committees.
  • Create scenario modelling tools to underpin agile student number forecasting.
  • Develop diagnostic reporting to highlight data quality issues in student record system.
  • Work closely with colleagues in Academic Services and faculties to resolve data quality issues, ensuring that records are compliant with regulatory guidelines.
  • Support compilation and assurance of student number statutory returns including Data Futures Student Return and Annual Offshore Return.
  • Liaise with the Higher Education Statistics Agency, Office for Students and other Designated Data Bodies and Professional Bodies as required, including providing supporting data to inform responses to queries generated as part of the statutory return process.
  • Work with others in the team to support the development and specification of requirements for data warehouse solutions.

In return we offer a generous pension and annual leave provision. We also operate a hybrid working model that allows staff to combine on-site and remote working where appropriate, dependent on work duties. We also provide access to excellent facilities on campus, including supportive family friendly policies.
