Position Overview & Specifications

This is a full time, fixed term appointment for six months.

Are you a historian of the Cold War period, with expertise on the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe in global perspective? The Wellcome-funded Connecting Three Worlds project seeks a postdoctoral researcher to work on Soviet/East European health internationalism with a focus on the African connections.

You will become part of a team of researchers at Birkbeck researching on Ethiopia, Ghana, South Africa and their links with the socialist East.

You will also be part of a wider group of collaborative researchers across Birkbeck, Exeter and UNAM, Mexico researching socialist internationalism including networks across Latin America and East Asia. The post includes funds for research and conference travel where appropriate.

You will have fluent Russian reading comprehension, preferably also with German or another language of the East European region.

The research will involve working on London-based newspaper and journal collections, in addition to published sources at the Wellcome, British Library and School of Slavonic and East European Studies Library. You will support the existing project members with research themes that have arisen in the project’s development, leading to co-authored articles in peer-reviewed journals and conference presentations.

There will also be scope for you to develop independent research within the project’s themes. Experience of working on London-based archival, library and particularly newspaper collections from the Soviet and East European region would be a strong advantage, along with subject expertise on Soviet/East European-African relations.

The Connecting Three Worlds Project is a Wellcome-funded Collaborative Award based across Birkbeck, Exeter and UNAM, Mexico. It pioneers anew history of global health that, for the first time, incorporates the socialist world during the Cold War and after. It identifies the particular health cultures produced by socialism across Africa, the Americas, Asia, and Europe; and explores the impact and legacies of socialist internationalism.https://connecting3worlds.org/
