Position Overview & Specifications

Automata is building a world-class company to disrupt the life science industry and empower scientists by making automation a reality for every lab.

We work with labs across the world to understand their specific workflows and needs and develop personalised solutions that range from diagnostic, drug discovery to synthetic biology.

This allows us to simplify common automation tasks, while also supporting more advanced paths for specialised workflows, in a fast, flexible, and cost-efficient way. We are looking for a Safety Engineer whose mission is to be a safety and compliance expert for robotic systems.

In your role you have to ensure that we are delivering safe and compliant products for their intended markets and applications by working closely with the development team.

Why is this role important for Automata?

As we are developing a completely new product, safety and compliance must expand within the company so that the appropriate level of support and direction can be provided to the various teams across the company to ensure the proper consideration of standard and processes throughout our development.

In this role you will be responsible for:-

  • Working as key link between cross functional teams to develop requirements, define interfaces, generate system overviews and drive the development and implementation of a safety system
  • Advising and implementing design and deployment teams on safety and compliance topics and best practise
  • Building and maintaining technical files for multiple machines
  • Conducting risk and PUWER assessments for products and machinery
  • Producing test plans and reports related to verification and validation activities
  • Overseeing or conducting verification and validation tests (e.g. EMC, force-pressure)

What it takes:

  • 4+ years of degree-level experience in an engineering discipline (preferably robotics or electrical / electronic engineering)
  • Experience with requirements engineering
  • Strong understanding of engineering fundamentals and ability to apply suitable methodical approaches in a fast-changing environment
  • Willingness to interface and drive various functional teams
  • Experience with breaking down standards and applying them to product development
  • Excellent technical report writing skills
  • Experience working with industrial robotics, machinery, or similar equipment
  • Familiarity with risk assessments and the certification process for machinery (e.g CE / UKCA)
  • Familiarity with machine safety technology (e.g. switch interlocks, AOPD, safety relays)
  • Good organisational skills, managing multiple technical files
  • Ability to communicate effectively to a wide range of engineering disciplines, as well as commercial stakeholders
  • Some experience with product V&V testing (e.g. EMC, IP testing, electrical safety)
Experience with robotics standards would be a bonus (e.g. ISO 10218-1, ISO/TS 15066)

Nice to haves:

  • Certified Machinery Safety Expert (CMSE) or similar qualification in machine safety or functional safety
  • Familiarity with machine safety standards outside of Europe (e.g. USA)
  • Experience conducting PUWER assessments
  • Knowledge of safety and compliance requirements for other platforms: medical devices; pressure vessels; food and beverage; etc
  • Experience integrating PLCs and industrial fieldbus technology
  • Good organisational skills, managing multiple projects
  • Ability to communicate effectively to a wide range of engineering disciplines, as well as commercial stakeholders

What gets us excited?

We’re passionate about the future of Technology and Automation and our growing success is built upon like minded individuals who share our passion.

In this role you will have the opportunity to work on many interesting projects, advising and supporting our forward developments teams on a wide range of automation projects. Automation companies such as Automata heavily rely on the advice of our safety and compliance experts in order to enable business, and thus command a great deal of respect.

Safety and compliance topics are a rapidly growing need within the company, with many opportunities for new team members to shape working practices and procedures. As an area that serves many different teams within the business, this will inevitably have a wider impact across the company.

If this sounds like a good fit and have tick the right boxes, you will love having the opportunity to build something that immediately adds value.
